Determinants of Financial Performance of Banks in Bhutan: A Case study of Bhutan National Bank Ltd

Abstract

Banking can be defined as an activity of accepting, as-well-as preserving money owned by other individuals and entities. Then banks lend out this money to other needy individuals or corporates in order to earn a profit. The economy of a country mostly depends on how strong their banking system is. This paper highlights the determinants that are responsible for the financial performance of commercial banks presently operating in Bhutan with a reference to Bhutan National Bank. The data collected for this study are from Bhutan National Bank from 2005-16. Multivariate regression analysis is performed on three dependent variables (Return on Assets, Return on Equity and Net Interest Margin) using five independent variables. The result showed that for explaining the determinants of financial performance of Banks in Bhutan, ROA model was considered to be the best as compared with ROE and NIM. The independent variables which had bearing on ROA were Interest income to total income, Interest on loan, Interest expenses to deposit and Credit to deposit ratio Banking can be defined as an activity of accepting, as-well-as preserving money owned by other individuals and entities. Krishna Murari (MBA, UGC NET (JRF) & PhD) is currently working as an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Management, Sikkim University (a Central University). Earlier he served in MITS-Lakshmangarh as Assistant Professor. Dr. Murari has Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Marketing & IT) from S. P. Jain Institute of Commerce, Business Management & Economicsof Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Agra, PhD in Commerce from MITS, Lakshmangarh. He has 14 years of teaching experience at Doctoral & PG level and has more than 30 research papers and articles publications in various international and national journals of repute and has participated and presented 16 papers in international and national conferences.

Aaditya Pradhan

Aaditya Pradhan has a Master Degree of Business Administration in Finance and Human Resource from Sikkim University after his Bachelor Degree of Business Administration in Finance from same University. He is pursuing ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ degree on ‘Performance Evaluation of Banking in Bhutan using Balanced Scorecard’ from Department of Management, Sikkim University. Aaditya worked as a visiting faculty for the Department of Management at Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University, Sikkim. He is presently working as an Assistant Lecturer at Norbuling Rigter College, Doteng, Paro. He has worked on two research papers pertaining to performance evaluation of banks operating in Bhutan and one of evaluation Non-Banking Financial Companies of India and has also presented in National and International conferences in India.
